Wang Ziwon, buddha_z, stainless steel, motorized mechanism, urethane, 42" x 8" x 18" (107 x 20 x 46 cm) ed. 3, 2008

The central sculpture in this triad borrows its form from a Korean national treasure, the bronze Maitreya Buddha figure ("Buddha of the Future") from the 6th century Shilla Dynasty. The artist's use of high-technology materials echoes this future orientation - but it is the delicate movement, driven by precise gearing and electronics, that provokes questions about the status of traditional beliefs in today's high-technology society.
